Many BioTech companies have estimated that an effective coronavirus vaccine, or multiple of them, will be ready by or in early 2021. So why are so many Americans now believing that it’ll come in the summer of 2021?
The answer lies in a leaked Pentagon memo, reported by Task and Purpose, and it has a lot of information.
Arguably the most important, the memo reports that there will be a significantly sized COVID-19 resurgence that the Defense Department should prepare for. The memo was made as attention needs to be shifted to “the resumption of training exercises, increased operational tempo, and the repositioning of forces and supplies to fight the global pandemic”, according to Task and Purpose.
The U.S Department of Defense is also reporting that according to Army researchers, the vaccine would be found and deemed safe for mass use by March, 2021. A lot of information seems to be coming from so many different sources, with all of them reporting different time frames. Pfizer, Moderna, and other frontrunning BioTech companies are claiming that their vaccines are seeing a realistic early 2021 release. Many U.S health officials gave us the 12-18 month time estimate in January of 2020, but are leaning more to 18 months. And even then, some experts are saying that this won’t be enough time.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, reports to Time and Purpose that if everything “falls in the right place”, then a January vaccine seems “doable”.
Of course, vaccine testing and development don’t go perfectly, regardless of the virus being fought. These time estimates are just so important right now as they’re the key to quarantine being over.
The Pentagon had this memo despite President Trump’s claim about the vaccine being ready “By the end of the year if we can, maybe before”.
Reporting to Military Times, Pentagon spokesman Chris Garver states that the Pentagon is indeed making plans that correspond with virus guidelines and safety precautions. Part of these plans include preparations for new outbreaks, expanded testing and medical research, and more. A video in April explains how service members in the military will be tested. Seeing as the video was released a few weeks ago, maybe the Pentagon have had these plans in place for a while.
One thing that any report or claim can agree on, it’s that it’s obvious the vaccine won’t be coming for at least a few more months. While unfortunate, it’s interesting to know that American government programs will continue to plan for a COVID-19 filled future with obstacles.
